LilyPad Learning Center and Preschool is accepting registrations for the 2017-2018 school year in Madrid. FREE 4 year old preschool and tuition-based 3 year old preschool. Burning is allowed during daylight hours in Madrid from March 25 until May 28, 2017.
The spring season for Girls on the Run is starting so sign up before March 6! Girls on the Run is a positive youth development program for girls in 3rd to 6th grade to encourage them to participate in physical activity. This ten-week program, which begins March 20, supports personal development, team building, and community connection. Each week, girls will meet at Madrid Elementary on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:15 to 4:30 pm and will participate in lessons, discussions and running games. A 5K will finish the season, and participants will have earned a shirt and water bottle. A fee is charged, but scholarships are available. Madrid, Iowa, has been chosen as a participant in the Iowa Small Town Poll. In the past, this poll was administered every ten years, but distribution frequency has been increased to once every two years to better capture the ways rural life is changing.
250 Madrid households be invited to fill out the survey with 2016 topics ranging from population change, recession recovery, crime, to drinking water quality. The survey can be filled out online, and each participant is entered into a drawing for a $100 gift card (30 winners will be chosen). Paper surveys can be requested if needed.

The Madrid Christmas Extravaganza will be on Monday, December 5, 2016. The Lighted Parade will begin at 6:00 pm.
The Madrid Area Chamber of Commerce (MAC) sponsors this event.
The annual Madrid Community Chest fundraiser begins October 4, 2016. A packet will be delivered to each Madrid residence, and donations support local programs, such as Madrid Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts; Madrid Little League, Softball, and Soccer; Madrid Public Library, Tiger Tots, Greater Love Ministries, youth and Shelter Services, Boone Community Services, Boone County Transportation, the Salvation Army, the Quad County Saddle Club, and the Mid-Iowa Council.
The Helms Farmstead has been in the Helms family since 1901. This century farm is located a mile south of Madrid along Highway 17, and it is being restored to show what a historical farm would have looked like and what machinery would have been used. The farm is now owed by the Madrid Historical Society. Clark Helms, the grandson of the original owners, Charles C. Helms and Mary Ellen Helms. Tours are available; call Clark at 515-202-3325.
