FEMA to Review Madrid Flood Plain Area in 2018

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is mapping elevations within Iowa, and FEMA will use the updated maps to determine flood plain designations throughout town. The paving and construction of the canal throughout town has greatly improved drainage of local areas yet many citizens are still required to pay flood insurance as FEMA’s flood plain map for the area has not been updated. FEMA is scheduled to survey Madrid in the first half of 2018. Individual properties can be surveyed prior to 2018 at the homeowner’s expense to contest the flood designation status; the survey cost starts at approximately $750 for a survey and then results would be submitted to FEMA for possible map adjustment.
